Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. As a child, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold), to become a waitress or cleaner so that they could be able to survive. Ruth was raised in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts in which she went to school. She quit school in just two years in order to study acting. Her journey was not without obstacles. her chosen career path. In New York she was hired to take photos for a publication about crime, but no theatrical job opportunities came up. When she was employed as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she quit and returned to Boston. The New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a steady actor. Earned money doing shifts during the day, as an usherette. She earned a bachelor's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
